For the past few years, the NFL has allowed players to wear custom cleats for one week that highlight a player’s favorite charitable cause. This year I’m going to be wearing cleats that shine a light on my own foundation, the Run Gio Foundation. Let me tell you a little more about the passion behind my foundation.
Growing up, I was the son of Haitian immigrants and we struggled financially as a family. Even with that hardship I was able to dedicate myself to and succeed in both my education and sports. Because of that hard work I was blessed to receive a scholarship to St. Thomas High School in Fort Lauderdale and then a scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I realize how fortunate I am to play the game I love and I want to give back to young people so that they can have the same opportunity of having a quality education - just like I did.
The Run Gio Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to provide children of Haiti with an opportunity for a quality education. Inspired by my mom, we built Le jardin vert de Josette, or, Josette's green garden 1st classroom with the help of family and friends. My ultimate dream is to have matching classrooms ring a courtyard and our goal is to fund the expansion entirely through my foundation. In addition to supporting education, my foundation provides youth football camps, free of charge, to children who may not have had the opportunity to attend otherwise.
