Mike Hughes was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the No. 30 overall pick out of the University of Central Florida on Thursday night and one of his fellow alums and now a teammate sent out his welcome to the squad.
Running back Latavius Murray is also a former member of the UCF football program and took to Twitter to share a message to his new teammate on the other side of the football. He also posted video of one of Hughes' most memorable plays from college.
"Not only did the @Vikings draft a shutdown corner, we got ourselves a helluva returner ?? I’ll never forget being on the @UCF_Football sidelines to witness this!”

Hughes was a bit of a controversial prospect coming into the 2018 NFL Draft. He started out at the University of North Carolina, but was suspended as a freshman in 2015 on an altercation that brought about misdemeanor assault charges. After the season, he left the program and transferred to Garden City Community College and then UCF in 2017, where he had a breakout season and declared for this draft class.
“We did a lot of homework, not only on him but any player that we felt had any type of (issue),’’ general manager Rick Spielman said. “We spent a lot of time with a lot of people that had him in their football programs. We spent a lot of time with people outside the football programs. And after our extensive research, no question we felt very confident about him coming in and being a Minnesota Viking.’’
Hughes is not going to be asked to do a lot early on in Minnesota, but he should be an immediate contributor in the return game and on special teams and, and Spielman said as much in is presser. He will be someone who competes for time in the slot with Mackensie Alexander. Depending on his progress, he could wind up being the No. 2 cornerback next to Rhodes if they decide to let Waynes leave in free agency after 2019.
He had 49 total tackles and four interceptions, including a pick six, and had 11 passes defended this past season at UCF. Hughes also returned 14 punts for 233 yards and a touchdown and 20 kickoffs for 635 yards and two touchdowns.
The 2018 NFL Draft resumes with the second and third rounds on Friday evening and the fourth through seventh rounds on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. ET.
