I Have So Much Respect for Andy Reid

I don’t think there is such a thing as an ‘easy’ game in the NFL, but man—we definitely have a challenge on our hands this week in Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs. How many touchdowns has their young QB have so far? From a DBs perspective, it’s too many!

So much pops out on Patrick Mahomes when you watch him on film. He trusts what he sees. He’s not afraid to take shots—and he has the arm to make them.  He takes risks; he’s efficient. Patrick is everything you want in a young quarterback. Plus, it’s an Andy Reid offense.

Andy Reid is a great guy. I’ve always had a ton of respect for him and for the way he calls a game.  It is so complicated! He will give you every single run in football in one game. He’ll give you the power, zone, counter, trap, draw, option—no one else in this league runs the option, but Andy will pull it out at the craziest possible time.

I think he did it to us in Seattle back in 2015 on a two-point conversion. Alex Smith ran it and pitched it. I’ll be honest-- we were as unprepared as could be for him to run that play at that time.

It’s always a treat to be able to game plan against him because he is such a creative offensive mind, a great coach, and a fun guy to play for from what I hear.

Of course, containing Patrick, or at least slowing him down, is going to be an important part of the game plan. No one’s done it so far, but I think we have a pretty good plan for doing so-- if we can execute it. Proper execution is going to be the key. With a guy like Patrick, you have to play sound, efficient football. You can’t have guys out of position or trying to do too much.

It's tough to try to scheme up for every single play you’re going to get. When you do, you can make the game plan way too complicated. You have to trust yourself, trust the game plan, and do your job.

Getting Reuben Foster back this week will be a real boost to the defense. It’s his first game back, and we’re excited to have him. I know he’s excited to be back out. It will be great to have his incredible energy, speed, explosiveness, and physicality back on the field.

We appreciate what he brings and look forward to him joining us out there.

It’s going to be a tough game, for sure. The Chiefs have some incredibly fast wide receivers, but we’ll deal with them. We’ve seen speedy receivers before. You just put your hands on them, get physical, stay on top of them, and do your job.

But it’s not all predicated on length and physicality; it’s predicated on being assignment sound and recognizing the holes in the defense and being able to cover up those holes.

Like I said—it’s going to be a tough game. Should be a fun one for the fans to watch. If we do what we’re supposed to do and execute, we’ll walk away 2-1.
