Art, Culture, and a Way Of Life

Art, Culture, and a Way Of Life

When a lot of people think about art, they envision art galleries and boring high society functions. They see the negative while barely scratching the surface of what art really is. Art gives you a broad canvass to express yourself and can be many things.

Through art, you can figure out that you’re not alone; that other people feel the same way and express themselves the same way you do. You can also be exposed to different cultures and ways of life.

Art, as a concept, allows for many different forms of expression—movies, television, music, painting, etc., to name a few.

When it comes to movies, I like all different types of movies, foreign, black and white, classics, animation. I probably lean more towards favoring directors than any particular genre. You can’t go wrong with anything by the Nolan brothers, David Fincher, Guillermo Del Toro, Tim Burton, the director of the Sicario, etc.

I’ve really enjoyed a lot of the new film by Spanish and Mexican directors lately. But it’s hard to pick certain guys since my interests are all over the place.

Of course, I can’t forget the greats; guys like Brian de Palma and Steven Spielberg. But a lot of them hardly make movies anymore.

As for my favorite movies, there are too many to name, but I have really enjoyed The Seven Samurai, Gladiator, The Pursuit of Happiness, and Straight Outta Compton. It all depends on my mood.

My taste in music can vary as well.

I really like genre-bending music. I like all types of music, but I’m mostly into hip-hop and R&B. But I really appreciate genre-bending music; you know, when two different styles are combined like reggae and rap.

I like when two things combine and make a new sound (i.e. Marley and Nas; Jay-Z and Linkin Park).

I’m glad I don’t really have to push my kids to take an interest in art. I encourage them every day, of course. We spend a lot of time, especially during the summer when California allows us to (which is a lot) going outside and painting. They listen to a lot of music.

My son writes a lot and leaves little books and comic books around the house. My daughter loves to paint; she’s into really art.

They do it naturally; on their own like it’s in their DNA.

Young athletes today need to realize something very important about art and culture and how they and their sports can relate.  It’s the same thing. Sports is life. It’s culture; what’s going on in America. It’s what’s going on in the world. Sports pick up where politics and religion fail. In its own right, sports is an artform.
