2017 has been an eventful year for Blanket Coverage, the Richard Sherman Family Foundation. Throughout the year we have helped over 10,000 students and their families from the Seattle area, down to Los Angeles.
February 2017, we disturbed 2,500 backpacks to homeless individuals in the Seattle/Tacoma area. The backpacks were filled with snacks, hand warmers, gloves, hats, toiletries, blankets, and other necessary winter items.
April 2017, we started assembling backpacks with World Vision in Fife, Washington. We partnered with World Vision to assemble 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for students in our local area as well as the Los Angeles area where Richard grew up. We aimed to assist students of all ages to prepare for the upcoming school year.
May 2017, we partnered with FINAO, Failure is not an option, to start planning our Campus Coverage program. This will allow us to take students to college campuses so they can experience what a day at college feels like. Each student will have the opportunity to speak with local college students about their experience, visit classrooms, and have a peek into what the future holds. We are excited to launch this program this year!
June 2017, Richard partnered with Microsoft to have a new computer lab built at his high school back in Compton, CA.
July 2017, Blanket Coverage hosted our annual charity gala where we raised over $300,000 to support our cause. Guests enjoyed the night with John Curly and Gee Scott as their hosts during our silent and live auction. This year we featured some amazing items donated by local chef John Howie, The Space Needle, and artist Absolon Moreau.
In July we also hosted our first annual backpack giveaway in Pullayup, Washington. This event was a fun filled day for families, where they enjoyed face painting, bouncy houses, and raffle prizes. We gave away over 2,000 backpacks to students from the greater Seattle area.
From July to October, our board members answered several calls and emails from local schools in need of supplies for their students. Deliveries were made on a weekly basis to ensure students had the supplies needed to be successful in the classroom.
December 2017, Blanket Coverage hosted our annual holiday giveaway with 25 adopted families in need, giving them a chance to celebrate the special time of year. This year we partnered with RAYS, Renton Area Youth Services, and The Seattle Urban Academy.
We want to give a huge thank you to all of our donors, sponsors, and to those who have supported us over the years. We truly appreciate each and every one of you, as none of this would be possible without your support. We also want to thank our volunteers who have graciously donated several hours to help us achieve our goals!
