People always ask me what I do on my off days. Normally I would say golf but usually here in Arizona it’s 110 degrees and I don’t want to wake up at 6:30 am. Instead I invite all the guys over, we order some food and just enjoy the day.
One of our favorite activities is something we call the Household Olympics. It consists of 7 events: pool basketball, normal basketball, park golf, air hockey, ping pong, billiards and Tiger Woods golf on PlayStation. The winner of each event gets 7 points, second place get 6 and so on. At the end of all 7 events whomever has the highest score wins.
It’s a competitive environment so it can get heated but after a long day we like to have what we call a show dinner. Show dinners consist of sitting down at a nice steakhouse and enjoying some good wine with your buddies. On game days and road trips there are a lot of times that we eat at the field or order room service so we always enjoy those dinners.
But that is the off days, game day is different. When I get to the ballpark I treat it like my office and it got me thinking that I need a place in the offseason where me and my boys can put in some work too so I bought some land back in Oklahoma to build a little place I call Crash Landing. A place where I can go in the offseason to workout and control everything I can. I don’t want to have to call someone or have someone unlock something for me. I just want to invest in myself and be able to control that side of my career. A place where my teammates and friends can have everything we need in one place. I can’t wait until it is complete.
When you really look at it, the best part of off days are just being around my friends and teammates. I’ve been blessed with great people in my life and a job that I love to do. It doesn’t get much better than that.
