What I bring to Detroit

I can’t say how excited I am to be finally starting OTAs here in Detroit, and reconnecting with Coach Patricia. This time of year is perfect for getting to know your new teammates and forge those bonds needed to be great. Our locker room is filled with a good mix of guys that can bring their own different experiences to the locker room, and that is always key to winning. One of those guys is our rookie second round pick, Kerryon Johnson.

My first impressions of Kerryon is that he is a hard working kid that seriously grinds. It’s always good when you can add talent, depth and competition to the running back room, and that’s what he brings. He has all the characteristics you want in a first year player. He grinds, studies hard and handles his business the right way which will translate from practice to the games. It’s early but Kerryon is showing why the team drafted him in the second round, and why his future is bright.

When I think about how I can contribute to this team the first thing that jumps out is my physicality. It’s extremely important for any team to get good at short yardage and converting on 3rd down. Situational football is the main reason why teams are successful and some are not. Most of the time big 3rd down conversion can win you the game, just by holding on to the ball. That is one of the reasons why running behind a full back, like Nick Bellore, will be fun. We haven’t put on pads yet but he seems like a great competitor that grinds and adds to the competition in the room. Looking forward to training camp and hearing those pads pop.
